CPMUS$10.00
CPM = (cost / impressions) x 1,000. Cost = (impressions / 1,000) x CPM. Impressions = (cost / CPM) x 1,000.
What this means

CPM tells you what reach costs, not whether the ads work.

A cheap CPM with no clicks or sales is still wasted money. Judge campaigns on cost per lead or sale against what a customer is worth to you, then use CPM to spot audiences or placements that cost far more than the rest.

The formula

CPM = (cost / impressions) x 1,000. Cost = (impressions / 1,000) x CPM. Impressions = (cost / CPM) x 1,000.

A worked example

A campaign costs 1,200 and gets 150,000 impressions. CPM = (1,200 / 150,000) x 1,000 = 8.

How to read your result

  • CPM measures the price of reach, not results. Compare it between your own audiences and placements to find expensive ones.
  • Judge campaigns on cost per lead or per sale against what a customer is worth.

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille: the cost of 1,000 impressions. "Mille" is Latin for thousand.

How is CPM different from CPC?

CPM is the price of 1,000 views of your ad; CPC is the price of one click. Some campaigns are bought on CPM and others on CPC, but both can be calculated for any campaign from cost, impressions and clicks.

Why does my CPM change?

Ad platforms run auctions, so CPM moves with competition for the same audience, the time of year, the placement and how relevant the platform judges your ad to be.
