The formula

CPC = ad cost / clicks. Break-even CPC = conversion rate x profit per customer.

A worked example

You spend 2,000 for 800 clicks: CPC is 2.50. If 3% of visitors become customers worth 120 profit each, break-even CPC is 0.03 x 120 = 3.60, so you have room.

How to read your result

  • Above your break-even CPC, every click loses money on average.
  • Raising your conversion rate raises the CPC you can afford, which lets you win more auctions.

CPC calculator: questions.

Anything else, ask us directly.

How is cost per click calculated?

Total ad cost divided by the number of clicks. Platforms show it as average CPC.

Why do some keywords cost so much per click?

Google Ads prices clicks in an auction. Searches with buying intent in sectors where a customer is worth a lot, such as legal, finance and property, attract many advertisers, so the price rises.

How do I lower my CPC?

Remove searches that do not lead to customers, make ads more relevant to each search, and improve the landing page. Lowering bids alone usually also lowers volume.
